The Offshore Oil and Gas industry uses submarine cables for several purposes:
- Transfer of power and data from a central
production platform to remote wellhead platforms, subsea wellheads or FPSOs
- Security rings linking several platforms' generating capacities
- Supply of power and data from the mainland.
One of the particular requirements is the identification of hazardous area status
and specification of appropriate termination systems.
Cables must be appropriate for the water depths, which sometimes can be
relatively deep for these, usually, smaller cables.
The question of cable burial and protection needs to be carefully addressed with
regard to the risks from marine activity in the area and the enforcibility of protection zones.
Mechanical design of the
cables needs to address water depth, seabed stability, and intrinsic cable mechanical protection especially for unburied
cables.
